What is Australian Charities and Not-for-profits Commission (ACNC) in Australia?

The Australian Charities and Not-for-profits Commission (ACNC) is the national regulator of charities in Australia. All charities need to be registered with ACNC for tax exemption, other exemptions and benefits and to provide tax deductible receipts. The ACNC also seeks to harmonise regulatory requirements across states, including fundraising laws.

Main objective of ACNC is

  • To maintain, protect and enhance public trust and confidence in the Australian not-for-profit sector
  • To support and sustain a robust, vibrant, independent and innovative not-for-profit sector
  • To promote the reduction of unnecessary regulatory obligations on the sector.
